Why use Infrared Thermography on Roofs?
By using Infrared Thermography, UST is able to find trapped moisture and mark these areas so that repairs can be made thereby preventing further damage. This can save money and prolong the life of the roof. UST typically marks the damaged areas with paint directly on the roof so that affected areas can be seen with the naked eye.
How it Works?
The sun radiates energy onto the roof and into the roof substratum. At night, the roof radiates the heat back into outer space. This is also known as "Radiational Cooling". The areas of the roof that are wet or higher in mass retain this heat longer than that of the dry areas or lower massed areas. Thermal Imagers can "see" the warmer (wet) areas and use this information to precisely mark the damaged area.
With careful analysis of the report generated by UST, a cost-effective removal and replacement of wet components can be put in place. Using Thermographic Surveying can help extend the satisfactory roofing system's service life. A Thermographic Scan is highly recommended before the final acceptance of a roofing project or before the termination period of a roof warranty.
